Predictably Unpredictable

A mid-century hotel with a record player stuck on French jazz. We didn’t explain the place. We let it be strange.

The brief

Hotel Lucine is a mid-century property in Galveston with a personality most hotels would sand off — toilet art, a record player that only ever seems to land on French jazz, a pool that’s somehow always immaculate. The easy film explains the amenities. The easy film also disappears, because every hotel on the seawall has amenities.

The idea

So we didn’t explain the place. We let it be strange. Thirty seconds built as a series of small, dry, symmetrical vignettes — a guest encountering the hotel’s quirks and simply accepting them. At The Fancy, the restaurant, we let a dish surprise the chef. No voiceover, no claims, no list of features. The joke is that nothing is ever explained, and that’s exactly what makes you want to go.

The writing came first and everything else served it. We wrote it, directed it, produced it and cut it — which meant the tone never got diluted by a handoff.

Shot on the Alexa 35 with Cooke Panchro primes: crisp detail with a vintage softness that sits in roughly the same decade as the building. Warm colours, hard symmetry, and details that are deliberately just slightly imperfect.

How we made it

Two days with a fifteen-person crew — art department, set decorators, hair and make-up, two talent. That size was the point rather than an indulgence: a film built on precise, symmetrical compositions and dressed sets doesn’t work with three people and a gimbal. Edit and colour in-house.

What happened

A marketing agency took the film and built a paid campaign around it, and it performed — the campaign returned 26× on ad spend. Our read on why: the writing gave the agency something with a point of view to place. Personality travels further than a feature list, and it gave them a piece that could work in a feed without being scrolled past. The film also picked up a Silver Telly.
